시길마사사우루스는 단순히 스피노사우루스 아이깁티아쿠스의 동종이명일 가능성이 높다고 합니다.
발견된 표본들이 너무 단편적이고(애초에 시길마사사우루스는 척추뼈 몇개로만 명명된 종입니다), 스피노사우루스와 구별되는 특징을 가진다고 주장된 화석들은 시길마사사우루스의 것으로 볼만한 근거가 부족하다고 합니다.
형태가 다른 척추들도 그냥 다른 위치의 척추들을 같은 위치의 척추로 오인했을 가능성이 높다네요.
